Gambling Rehab

Accepting the need for gambling rehab

While we can all enjoy a flutter from time to time, 'problem gamblers' can make gambling a compulsion that is difficult to control, and which ends up taking over their life, relationships and job. If you've noticed that you often gamble more than you can afford to lose, gamble away important money needed for things like mortgage payments or utility bills, or that you have borrowed or stolen money to fund gambling, it may be time to consider whether you have a gambling addiction that requires rehab.

We can offer gambling rehab services at Step 1 Recovery, so that you can live a life free from the compulsion of gambling. We have a compassionate approach to every kind of addiction, and offer treatments that involve mindfulness and holistic therapies in the sunny climate of Spain, which is known to promote positivity, health and well-being. Working together, we can help you or a family member to rehabilitate and live a life that no longer involves excessive gambling behaviour.

Do I need help for gambling rehab?

Before you contact us it is worth you carrying out the following self-assessment to see if your gambling behaviours could be considered an addiction that requires rehab at our retreat in Spain. Ask yourself the below questions, giving 'yes' or 'no' answers to each one in turn.

  1. 1. Have you borrowed or stolen money from a loved one that you then use for gambling?
  2. 2. Are you secretive about your gambling?
  3. 3. Have you ever chased losses and tried to win back money that you've already lost?
  4. 4. Has your gambling affected your relationships with your family and friends?
  5. 5. Have your loved ones hinted that you may have a gambling addiction?
  6. 6. Has gambling ever caused you additional health worries such as anxiety, panic attacks, or mental health conditions like depression?

If you have answered 'yes' to three or more of these questions, you could require gambling rehab for an addiction. We can help at our rehab centre in Spain at Step 1 Recovery, and encourage you to give us a call.

Why choose gambling rehab with Step 1 Recovery?

When we first begin to work with you, we will discuss your gambling actions in detail to determine the severity of your addiction. We’ll also talk about symptoms you may be experiencing, for instance, anxiety or depression, to see if you similarly need treatment for these conditions as part of your gambling rehab treatment with us. You will be assigned a therapist who can give you 24/7 support and will talk you through your bespoke treatment plan. We will also invite friends and loved ones to visit you in our centre so you feel completely supported in your journey.

We treat gambling addictions in a very similar way to other addictions (such as those that involve the use of drugs). Treatments include cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and family and group speech therapy, in which you can talk openly about your relationship with gambling. We will undertake the following treatments with you to help you start to relax and feel more in control of your gambling:

Cognitive behavioural therapy: This is an intensive therapy session in which we re-wire the brain to gradually change your attitudes towards gambling to encourage a more healthy approach to it as entertainment, rather than a way to make money. You will receive constant support throughout any difficult periods you have that cause you anxiety. This is a behavioural technique that you can use post-rehab time in our clinic, helping you cope more easily with daily situations that involve gambling.

Family/group therapy: This is where we get you together with your loved ones and/or other people who are currently staying at the centre with us and talk about your gambling behaviours together as a group, covering your triggers and feelings. This is also something you can continue as part of your aftercare treatment by signing up to a programme such as Gamblers Anonymous.

We offer our clients in-client treatment at our centre, so we can focus on your gambling rehab programme properly by having you stay with us in luxurious and comfortable accommodation. How long you stay is up to you, but we will happily advise how long we think you need based on your initial consultation with us. Every person is different, but we always advise that you stay for long enough for us to focus on the mental triggers of your gambling addiction to prevent relapse and to give you a different way of thinking about gambling.
