What is The Recovery Timeline To Addiction?

Each year, approximately 34,378 people complete addiction treatment. Upon leaving rehab, many believe that recovery will be somewhat easy. A significant amount of people also think that leaving rehab means that they have achieved addiction recovery. However, this is not true. Addiction recovery is a lifelong process.

If you find yourself searching for answers to the question “what is the recovery timeline to addiction?”, you have come to the right place. At Step One Recovery, we have outlined the recovery timeline here.

The Stages Of Addiction Recovery

Below, we have shared the most common stages of addiction recovery. However, as no one person or addiction is the same, we would encourage you to remain open-minded when questioning, “what is the recovery timeline to addiction?”.

Stage One – Addressing your addiction

Although many people believe that addiction recovery commences when treatment starts, this is not true. Addiction recovery begins when an individual addresses their addiction and realises that their relationship with substances, or a behaviour, is impairing their life.

Stage Two – Securing addiction treatment

Having admitted to yourself or even a loved one that you are struggling with an addiction, the next stage in addiction recovery is securing treatment.

Addiction treatment is available via private inpatient rehabs, such as our own, or outpatient rehabs, such as NHS rehabs.

Securing treatment will see you required to complete a pre-admission assessment and a clinical assessment. Pre-admission assessments are typically conducted over the telephone when you make initial contact with rehab of your choice. In contrast, clinical assessments are carried out by medical professionals upon entering rehab.

Stage Three – Detoxification

The third stage of addiction recovery is detoxification. Initiating the recovery process, here, you will abstain from substances and embark on your recovery journey.

This is the hardest part of addiction recovery for many individuals, as this stage sees you withdraw from the substances you have become addicted to. Doing so often gives way to various withdrawal symptoms, which can be unpleasant. However, this stage of treatment is temporary and typically only lasts for seven days.

Some individuals who require addiction treatment will attempt to complete this stage of recovery alone. However, doing so is not safe nor recommended. When treatment is not sought at this stage, the risk of relapse is extremely high.

Stage Four – Completing rehabilitation

As you progress through detoxification, the next stage in the recovery timeline is rehabilitation. During this stage, you will encounter psychological and well-being therapies in one-to-one and group settings. These treatments will encourage you to address the root cause of your addiction and develop coping strategies that will assist you in maintaining your sobriety.

Unlike detoxification, there is no set time frame for this stage of the recovery timeline. Some individuals will complete rehabilitation within 28 days; however, some will require rehabilitation for a prolonged period.

Stage Five – Aftercare support

Unbeknown to many, the recovery timeline goes well beyond attending rehab. In fact, it could be said that attending rehab is simply the start of the recovery timeline.

Upon completing the first four stages of recovery, stage five will begin. Here, 12-months of free aftercare support is completed to ensure that you have the best possible chance of maintaining your sobriety in the first year following treatment.

Aftercare usually consists of group therapy. Ongoing one-to-one therapy can also be provided should it be required.

Stage Six – Achieving a long-term sobriety

One year after completing addiction treatment, you will reach the final stage of the recovery timeline.

With a wealth of tools, support, and guidance, this stage will see you achieve long-term sobriety. Although your risk of relapse will decrease by this stage, your hard work does not stop here.

Implementing the tools and strategies obtained during your time in rehab, you will find that long-term recovery is possible. You will also feel happier, healthier, and more optimistic about the future.

Addiction Treatment

When asking the question “what is the recovery timeline to addiction?”, it is worth considering that the treatments an individual requires will influence the addiction recovery timeline. This is because the treatment secured and the type of rehab attended will dictate the length of the first two stages of the addiction recovery timeline.

For example, when addiction treatment is secured via a private inpatient rehab centre, such as our own, treatment spans between 28 and 90 days. Upon completing inpatient treatment, many will return home to continue their recovery.

In contrast, if treatment is sought via an outpatient rehab, it usually takes much longer to complete. This is because treatment is not as intense and typically includes up to 12 hours of treatment a week. For this very reason, complete outpatient treatment takes at least four months to complete.

Factors such as the severity of addiction will also contribute to the recovery timeline. Those struggling with severe addictions or dual diagnoses will often require treatment for a more extended period. Meanwhile, those with mild addictions may find it easier to overcome their struggles with substances.
